Which summer 2020 in Ibiza? After a few weeks of lockdown there are the first positive signs.
Let’s start with the good news: in a few days the island of Ibiza will enter the so-called “Phase 1” and many economic activities will finally be able to reopen, albeit with all the necessary precautions.
In the meantime, as you will have already seen on social networks, people can leave the house again, even if staggered in different time slots as established by government provisions.
Another positive sign is that the Ibizan authorities have shown their willingness to start – somehow – the summer season.
Ibiza is an island that lives mainly on tourism, and the choice could not be different.
Now let’s try to understand what will happen in practice.
In the first place, the decisions of the Spanish central government regarding tourism will be fundamental.
The Spanish economy has a strategic resource in foreign tourism, and this is an essential fact that leads to cautious optimism.
Now let’s analyze together three very important aspects in Ibizan tourism: air flights, price policy and clubbing tourism.
Air flights: tourism in Ibiza largely depends on the airlines that transport millions of visitors every summer. How many companies will actually fly to the island? What standards will they adopt for sanitary safety on board? What will be – sore point – the new airline pricing policy? It would be important to have clear answers quickly.
Price policy: indiscriminate price increases in Ibiza have discouraged many tourists in recent years. Coronavirus is expected to induce everyone to reduce the island’s costs. Otherwise, the lesson will not be served, and the foreign competitors will thank you once again.
Chapter clubbing. We hope that, at some point in the summer season, the island’s famous discos can be operational.
Currently we cannot say if and in which way this will happen (and… what audience capacity discos can realistically have?).
We hope that the institutions and representatives of the nightlife industry can find the best solution together.
In any case, when Ibiza reopens, we hope for a beautiful summer: the island still has wonderful beaches, the climate is excellent, the sunsets are fantastic and the summer surprise could be given by the beach clubs.
